White metal exercise part 2
After my initial exercise with the van, I decided to go the whole hog and do a white metal kit.
Awhile back I obtained an old Bec G6 kit and thought why not. Having ordered some 70 degree solder, flux and tip cleaner from Eileen's, I went ahead.
Following the advice from the O Gauge demo I managed to put the loco together with out too much fettling required.
I also had in stock a brass stovepipe chimney and dome surplus from the Branchlines Adams Radial kit which enabled me to practice soldering brass to white metal.
Pretty pleased with the result, the only downside being that there are a few bits missing.
An appeal to the 3mm group has gone out for the missing bits, failing that plasticard will suffice for the Spectacle plates and may have some spare tank fillers knocking about, a true mixed media kit!

White metal Soldering
Having watched the recent O Gauge Guild virtual show, one of the demos was about soldering white metal given by Andy Duncan of Duncan Models.
White metal Soldering is one thing I have always wanted to try, so one Weller 15w soldering iron later gave it a go.
Main tips were to clean the surfaces to be joined, use plenty of flux, quick in and out with the iron.
So using a cheap 3mm white metal van kit, I solder one together with the resulting pictures
Lessons learned , yes use plenty of flux (white metal one on order) and to use the right temperature solder (used 145 instead of 70, again on order). Quick in and out with the iron (you can see I lingered to long with subsequent hole in the van end, filled with solder).
I then went on to use the same for a white metal buffer stop, soldered one side the other needs the buffer stop drilling to complete.
Would I try some more, yes I would.
Thanks to the O Guage Guild demo, see here for the link to the virtual show
